Environmental protection
Every business activity has an impact on the environment – we are part of this, too. We are aware that our business activities pose potential risks to the environment and that we all depend on the conservation of our environment and resources. We do everything we can to reduce the impact of our business activitiers on the environment to an absolute minimum.
We use energy efficiently and are certified in accordance with ISO 50001 / Energy Management System. We promote environmental awareness among our employees and ensure that environmental incidents are investigated transparently and their causes eliminated. For many years, we have logged product spills and their volumes, as well as amount of energy and water used and the waste produced at our sites, and have established corresponding key indicators so as to better identify and evaluate our development in this area. To assess our impact on climate change, Mabanaft also calculates the carbon (CO2) footprint of the entire group of companies.
One preventive measure taken as part of our HSSE management, is to regularly monitor the groundwater quality at our tank terminals and have the data obtained evaluated centrally by our environmental experts.
Precautions in case of spills in water
Besides our efforts to prevent environmental damage, we focus on a purposive and swift response to emergency situations. To ensure professional support for its subsidiaries in the event of a major oil spill, the Mabanaft Group is a shareholder in Oil Spill Response Limited, the world’s largest oil spill response company. As part of this, Oiltanking Deutschland has developed scenario-specific contingency plans for all relevant sites, and cariried out practical training and drills. Mabanaft is also an active member of the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF), a voluntary association of oil companies that works to ensure the safe and ecologically responsible operation of oil tankers and tank terminals.
Waste & wastewater management
We collect both industrial waste (e.g. metals, packaging) and waste requiring monitoring (e.g. product residues, separator residues), which requires special treatment and must be disposed of separately. Most of the waste requiring monitoring at our terminals consists of contaminated water from oil-water separators and residues from tank cleaning. We pump these out with the help of suction trucks and hand them over to external, specialized companies for treatment.
